Master Online

Master Online

In winter semester 2007/08 the University of Freiburg began offering three postgraduate programs: „Master Online in Periodontics,“ „MBA in Estate Planning,“ and „Intelligent Embedded Microsystems – IEMS.“ The prerequisites for admission to all three programs is a previous degree and at least one to two years of professional experience. The innovative new degree programs all lead to a master’s degree and can be completed alongside a full-time job. The modularized curricula of the programs are organized in the form of blended learning (i.e. a combination of tutored online self-learning phases and on-campus courses). The online portions of the program allow students more freedom from time constraints and commuting.
Starting in summer semester 2010 and winter semester 2010/11 the university will offer three more master programs in the blended learning format: Master of Science in Photovoltaics, Physicotechnical Medicine (PTM), and Palliative Care Online (PalliCon).

Master Online in Periodontics

The “Master Online in Periodontics” degree program offers licensed dentists theoretical foundations and practical skills in the diagnostics and therapy of diseases in the supporting structures of the teeth. The online portions of the program are designed to impart theoretical knowledge. In this phase, students receive intensive tutoring by trained tele-tutors. The on-campus portions of the course are reserved for practical training in conducting operations.

The aging of our society and its heightened interest in dental health will lead to an increased demand for periodontal therapy and thus also to an increased importance of the field of periodontics. The new “master online in periodontics” responds to this demand by providing a high-quality and methodologically sound postgraduate program for dentists who wish to gain qualifications in this promising field.

Intelligent Embedded Microsystems - IEMS

“Computers you can’t see” are being lauded as the next big thing in information technology. The challenge of exploiting the growth potential of intelligent embedded systems, their wide range of application, and the numerous conceptual and technical advantages they offer constitutes a lucrative opportunity for research and industry in the coming years. The postgraduate degree program “Intelligent Embedded Microsystems – IEMS” is designed provide graduates of computer science, microsystems technology, and related fields with at least two years of professional experience behind them with the technological and algorithmic skills necessary for developing intelligent embedded microsystems. Depending on the student’s previous studies (B.A., degree from a university of applied sciences, diplom), the program encompasses a workload of between 60 and 120 ECTS credits. It consists of online courses with exercise courses, practical courses, projects, seminars, and a master thesis and qualifies graduates for a career in this growing field.

Master of Science in Photovoltaics

Qualified personnel are of prime importance for research, development, and production in the promising field of photovoltaics (which is concerned with the direct conversion of sunlight into electric energy). This new degree program provides graduate students a solid background in the physics, technology, systems engineering, and business fundamentals of photovoltaics. The program is coordinated by the Center for Renewable Energy in cooperation with the Faculty of Engineering of the University of Freiburg and the Fraunhofer Institute for Solar Energy Systems. The preparatory courses for the program will be offered starting in summer semester 2010, and the regular curriculum is scheduled to begin in winter semester 2010/11.

Master in Physicotechnical Medicine (PTM)

The increasing mechanization of medicine in practically all clinical fields makes it more necessary than ever before for doctors to acquire solid technical competence. This includes an understanding of how to use technical medical instruments and interpret complex data, knowledge of new treatments and diagnostic procedures and, last but not least, the ability to determine which technical products to purchase for use at clinics and hospitals. The degree program „Physicotechnical Medicine,“ to be launched in summer semester 2010, offers high-quality supplementary training for doctors who are either working in fields with a strong technical orientation or simply interested in the technical aspects of medicine. After a basic training with practical phases, students select two areas of specialization from a range of fields in which technology plays a central role, including intensive care medicine, surgical technology, medical informatics, and functional medical imaging.
