Requirements for an Erasmus foreign study visit

All German and international students who are matriculated at the University of Freiburg as full-time students and have studied here for at least two semesters before starting the foreign study visit are entitled to take part.

Application

Students have to apply to Erasmus subject coordinators for an Erasmus study visit. They regularly invite students either to information events or publicize the arrangements for applications to Erasmus in notices or mailshots. These inform students of the deadlines for applications and which partner universities they can apply to, and what subject-related requirements there are for applications (cover letter, study grades, language skills, social engagement). Information events should be attended about one year before the planned foreign study visit.

Length of stay

The Erasmus foreign study visit can last between 3 and 12 months, depending on agreement. A maximum of twelve months foreign study through Erasmus is possible on one degree (e.g. Bachelor, Master, PhD). Erasmus internships are counted the same as previous Erasmus foreign study visits. In the case of specific study courses (e.g. state examinations, diplomas) a total of 24 months on foreign study visits is possible.

Funding period

Participants in Erasmus programs are granted a period of funding for which they are paid the mobility grant. This funding period must not correspond with the actual length of stay:

  • For stays of one semester, the period of funding is a maximum of four months (120 days).
  • For stays of two semesters, the period of funding is a maximum of eight months (240 days).

The mobility grant is paid in two installments. Students receive the first installment at the start of their foreign study visit, and the second after the foreign study visit, on submission of the necessary documents.

Mobility grant

The mobility grant for the Erasmus study visit is graded by country group, which varies depending on the different costs of living in the destination countries. There are three country groups with the following funding levels for the 2018/19 academic year:

  • Country group 1: EUR 420/month funding
Denmark, Finland, Ireland, Iceland, Liechtenstein, Luxembourg, Norway, Sweden, United Kingdom
  • Country group 2: EUR 360/month funding
Belgium, Germany, France, Greece, Italy, Malta, Netherlands, Austria, Portugal, Spain, Cyprus
  • Country group 3: EUR 300/month funding
Bulgaria, Estonia, Croatia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Romania, Slovakia, Slovenia, FYR Macedonia, Czech Republic, Turkey, Hungary

Please note that there is no automatic right to funding or to a specific level of grant.

Additional funding for students with disabilities or with a child

Students with disabilities or child(ren) are entitled to apply for additional funding. You can obtain the necessary documentation from the EU Office.

Language courses

Language courses cannot be funded.

Students whose teaching language at the host university is not the same as their mother tongue take part in two OLS language tests. Depending on the linguistic level, after the test they are either sent an invitation to an online language course automatically or this can be sent by the EU Office on request.

Online language courses can be approved for the language of teaching or of the host country.
