1. What is Eucor?

In 1989 seven universities in the Upper Rhine Valley,

formed an international network, the European Confederation of Universities on the Upper Rhine (Eucor). In 2009 the three universities in Strasbourg merged to form the Université de Strasbourg. The objective of Eucor is cooperation in instruction and research through academic exchange, joint courses of study and research programs, and accreditation of course work done at any of the participating universities. The various activities of the confederation are coordinated at the central Eucor Office in Strasbourg.

Students enrolled at one of the five Eucor universities enjoy the same privileges and discounts at the other four universities as the students enrolled there. This includes the right to take courses without paying additional fees as well as to use the local public transportation services, provided that certain conditions are fulfilled (see below). Cross-border studies are especially useful for acquiring supplementary qualifications not available at one’s home university. In addition, taking courses at one of the other member universities is an excellent way to gain international experience and improve one’s language skills.

2.1 What do I have to do to take a course at a Eucor university?

  • Apply for an Eucor student identification card at the International Office. To do so, please come during the office hours and bring a passport photo and your student identification card or UniCard with you.
  • Find information about course offerings on the homepages of the Eucor universities.
  • Check with your department or examination office in Freiburg before beginning the course to find out whether you can receive credit for your degree program.
  • Download a Eucor attestation in German [PDF 33KB] or French [PDF 31KB] and ask your professor at the Eucor host university to fill it out. Make sure the attestation is also stamped with the official seal of the university. You will need the Eucor attestation to have your course work accredited in Freiburg, to verify that you attended the course, and to apply for a refund for your travel expenses.
  • Apply for an allowance to cover your travel expenses and submit the refund invoice at the end of the event.
  • Note that semesters begin and end at different times in France and Switzerland!

2.2 Eucor at the partner universities:

Basel: Register at the beginning of the semester at the Student Registration Office, Petersplatz 1. Make sure to bring your Eucor identification card and your UniCard as well as the completed initial registration form (if you are taking a course in Basel for the first time) and the course registration certificate (the so-called “Belegschein”). The two forms are available for download on the homepage of the University of Basel in the section Studium/Mobilität/Eucor.

Strasbourg and Mulhouse/Colmar: You must register at the department you wish to take a course at. Make sure to bring your Eucor identification card. As a rule, the first place to go if you have a question or problem is the “Service des Relations Internationales.” NOTICE: The complete course offerings are not always published on the homepage. It is thus advisable to pay an informal visit to the university a week before the beginning of the semester and check the bulletin board at the department.

Karlsruhe: You must register directly with the instructor of the course you wish to take. Make sure to bring your Eucor identification card. You can obtain a cash card for the cafeteria or a public transportation pass at the info center of the Office of Student Services in the foyer of the university cafeteria.

2.3 How do I apply for a refund for travel expenses?

If you have decided to take a course at a Eucor university, you can apply at the International Office to have your travel expenses refunded. Please complete the application (PDF [100KB]) and send the original to the International Office.

Due to the need for verification, only trips with public transport are eligible. Car trips will no longer be refunded as of the Autumn/ Winter Semester 2011/12.

3.3 Registration in subsequent semesters:

Eucor students who wish to study in Freiburg for longer than one semester need to register each semester in order to reactive their UniCard.

  • Students who do NOT wish to purchase the SemesterTicket should send Ms. Kühnle an e-mail with a current certificate of enrollment from their home university in order to have the UniCard reactivated. The student can then update the UniCard at one of the UniCard terminals.
