Qualification for Admission to Institutions of Higher Education for degree seeking students

International applicants who apply for admission at a German institution of higher education must provide evidence of their qualification for admission. International applicants whose qualifications are judged to be equivalent to those required of German applicants can be admitted directly to a course of study.
If you have already studied successfully for two or more semesters in your native country, you can generally be admitted directly to a degree program at the ALU. The decision as to whether qualifications for admission to studies in a foreign country are equivalent to the German qualifications or only partially equivalent is a matter of the ministers of education and the arts of the German states (Central Office for Foreign Education Systems) and is made on the basis of their recommendations. You can check whether your qualifications for admission to studies are equivalent to those required in Germany on the Database of the Conference of the Ministers of Education and the Arts or at the DAAD.

International applicants with qualifications for admission to institutions of higher education which are only partially equivalent to those required of German applicants must take the "Feststellungsprüfung" (Entrance Examination for Institutions of Higher Education) and receive the possibility of preparing for their studies in a year of preparatory courses at the Studienkolleg (College for Foreign Students) at the University of Heidelberg (Im Neuenheimer Feld 684, 69120 Heidelberg; Tel.: 06221/545940; Fax: 06221/545941; http://www.isz.uni-hd.de). It is not possible to register directly for the course. You must thus file a complete application for studies at the University of Freiburg even if you wish or need to take preparatory courses (in Heidelberg) before commencing your studies in Freiburg.
