Transfer of Foreign-Earned Credit for degree seeking students
Academic degrees or credits earned in foreign countries often cannot be transferred directly on a one to one basis. The reasons for this lie in the fact that there are often substantial differences between the university systems of various countries as well as between the content and structure of courses of study.
Credits may only be transferred if
they are determined to be equivalent to the requirements for the same degree
program at the ALU. In order to establish this, applicants should provide a
complete description of their previous academic work and evidence of the
credits they have earned and the examinations they have passed with
documentation. The more detailed and complete this description is, the better
the applicant’s achievement can be assessed. Responsible for the transfer of credits is the academic department or examination committee (Prüfungsamt) of the applicant’s field of study.
For courses of study which conclude with a state
examination (teacher training courses of study, medicine, pharmacy, and
dentistry), the assessment of foreign-earned credits and degrees must be
carried out by the state examination office (Landesprüfungsamt) responsible for the
applicant’s field of study or the examination office for secondary school
teaching. An exception to this is the course of study leading to the state examination in law. For this
course of study the Faculty of Law at the University of Freiburg makes decisions as to the transfer
of credits and degrees, not the State Law Examination Office.
