Resident Registration and Residency Permits

Resident Registration
Within 10 days after moving into your room or apartment in Freiburg, you must register as a resident at the Resident Registration Office of the City of Freiburg (see “Contact Information” on menu). Please do not forget to take along your passport or identification card. If you live outside of the city of Freiburg, you must register at the resident registration office responsible for the town in which you live. You will also receive information on resident registration along with your letter of acceptance from the University of Freiburg.

When you register as a resident, you will receive written confirmation. Please do not lose this document.
Please note: Everyone who lives in Germany must go to the Resident Registration Office of their municipality and register their new address within a week after they move.

Residency Permit
Are you a citizen of an EU member country or of Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, or Switzerland?
Then you will receive a certificate confirming your right to reside in Germany when you visit the Resident Registration Office. You might also have to provide evidence that you have sufficient financial resources and health insurance coverage.
Are you a citizen of a country other than those listed above?
Then you must go to the Immigration Office (see “Contact Information” on menu) and apply for a residency permit after registering your address at the Resident Registration Office. Be sure to take along the following:

  • confirmation of registration from the Resident Registration Office,
  • proof of health insurance coverage,
  • your certificate of enrollment,
  • evidence of sufficient funding to finance your stay,
  • your pass (with visa, if applicable),
  • certificate of health, if applicable,
  • ca. 100 euros to pay for your residency permit,
  • biometric passport photos.

You will receive a residency permit for a minimum of one year and a maximum of two years. It is possible to renew it.
