Health Insurance
Students in Germany are required to have health insurance. When you enroll at the University of Freiburg, you must thus provide evidence that you have coverage in Germany. It is advisable to determine how you can receive health insurance coverage before you arrive in Germany. All students under 30 who have been enrolled for 14 semesters or less are eligible for special reduced-rate health insurance policies.
Some foreign health insurance policies are also valid in Germany. This is the case with statutory insurance policies from EU member countries or from Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway, Switzerland, and Macedonia. Germany has signed agreements with these countries to ensure cross-border coverage. All you need to do to extend your coverage to Germany if you have one of these policies is apply for a European Health Insurance Card (EHIC). Then, just take this card to a statutory health insurance company upon arrival in Freiburg and request a certificate of exemption from the health insurance requirement. You must present this certificate when you enroll.
If you have private health insurance in your native country, it might be possible to have it recognized in Germany under certain circumstances. To do so, take your private insurance policy to a statutory health insurance company in Germany. If your policy is recognized, you will receive a certificate confirming that you are exempt from the health insurance requirement to present when you enroll. However, in this case you will not be allowed to switch to a statutory health insurance company for the duration of your studies in Germany.
If you do not have a health insurance policy that is valid in Germany, you must apply for insurance from a German health insurance company. You will receive a certificate of coverage to submit when you matriculate at the University of Freiburg.
