Examination Candidates

As per § 17 of the Admissions and Matriculation Regulations (ZlmmO) of the University of Freiburg from 20 Sept. 2007 (Amtliche Bekanntmachung No. 53 from 20 Sept. 2007, pp. 212-225), examination candidates must be matriculated at the University of Freiburg until they have completed all parts of their examinations (oral or written examinations and written thesis), including parts of the examination which need to be retaken.

That means that these students are required to pay student tuition for the duration of their examination phase as per §§ 3 ff. of the State University Tuition Law (LHGebG) of Baden-Württemberg and §§ 1 ff. of the Articles on Charging Student Tuition in Non-Consecutive Master Degree Programs and Postgraduate Degree Programs at the University of Freiburg (in the following: Articles).

Examination candidates who exmatriculate within a month after the beginning of the teaching period will receive a full refund for already paid student tuition for the current semester. Candidates who exmatriculate after this date will receive a partial refund (§ 5 paragraph 3 of the LHGebG and § 5 of the Articles).

When exmatriculating, the student must submit written confirmation from the appropriate examination office that he or she has completed all parts of the examination.
If the last part of the examination is a written thesis (Diplom thesis, master thesis), it is sufficient for the student to submit a certificate confirming that he or she handed in the thesis on time.

If it turns out afterwards that the candidate received a failing grade on the thesis and has therefore not yet completed the examination procedure, the exmatriculation has to be retracted and the candidate is required to pay student tuition until he or she has completed the examination procedure.

In the case that the examination phase is extended due to reasons which the University of Freiburg is responsible for and the student is required to register for one or more further semesters, the student may apply for an waiver of student tuition at the Tuition Department as per § 6 paragraph 3 of the LHGebG in conjunction with § 22 of the State Tuition Law (LGebG) of Baden-Württemberg or § 6 paragraph 4 of the Articles in conjunction with § 22 of the LGebG.
The informal application for a waiver of student tuition must be accompanied by a letter of confirmation from the appropriate examination office providing information on the responsible examiners and the concrete reasons for the delay. The letter must be signed by the head of the appropriate examination committee.
