International Students
International students who are matriculated in an undergraduate degree program or in a consecutive master degree program and are not eligible for a student loan (article 7 – final provisions – of the amending statute from 19 December 2005)
International students who are not from an EU member country, Iceland, Liechtenstein, or Norway and are not eligible for a student loan are exempt from paying the tuition fees for the remainder of their course of study if they have not exceeded the standard period of study by more than four semesters and if they were matriculated at an institution of higher education or a vocational academy in Baden-Württemberg when the law on tuition took effect (cutoff date: 28 December 2005) or if they were enrolled at a college for foreign students in Baden-Württemberg and received a reserved spot (conditional admission) for a particular degree program at an institution of higher education or a vocational academy in Baden-Württemberg before the Law on Student Tuition became effective on 28 December 2005.
The exemption is nullified if the student changes degree programs or if the student interrupts his or her studies.
International students who did not earn their higher education entrance qualification in Germany and are enrolled in a non-consecutive master degree program or in a postgraduate degree program (§ 7 paragraph 2 of the Articles on Charging Student Tuition in Non-Consecutive Master Degree Programs and Postgraduate Degree Programs at the University of Freiburg – in the following: Articles)
International students who did not earn their higher education entrance qualification in Germany and
were already matriculated in a non-consecutive master degree program or postgraduate degree program when the Articles became effective (01 June 2007) are allowed four additional university semesters to finish their degree without being required to pay tuition, provided that they have not exceeded the standard period of study for their degree program by more than four semesters.
Exchange programs for international students (§ 6 paragraph 2 of the LHGebG and § 6 paragraph 3 of the Articles)
International students who are matricultated within the context of state, national, or international agreements or institutional partnerships which guarantee an exemption from fees at their host institution are exempt from the tuition requirement.
