DAAD (German Academic Exchange Service) helps universities in Germany facilitate short stay-abroad opportunities outside of Europe.
Degree-seeking students at the University of Freiburg are able to apply for DAAD-PROMOS scholarships through the International Office.

Target group – Who can apply?

Students whose situations apply to all the following conditions can apply:

  • Students of all nationalities
  • Studying full-time
  • Planning to complete their degree at the University of Freiburg
  • Planning to do a short study-abroad, while complying with the regulations (see below - ''Program lines')

Please note:

  • These scholarships are not meant to support your studies in Freiburg at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg.
  • If you are looking for a funding opportunity for any nationality as a full-time, degree-seeking student who is planning on completing the entire study program in Freiburg, please contact this department for further information.
  • You are not eligible to apply for this scholarship program if you are:
    • a student in a different university (not University of Freiburg) who is planning to study abroad
    • an exchange student (for one or two semesters)
    • an incoming free-mover student (for one or two semesters)
    • a PhD student
    • going abroad via an exchange program
    • going abroad to your home country (e.g. Brazilian nationals going to Brazil cannot apply)

This also applies to countries where you have permanently lived in the past 5 years.

Program lines – Which projects can be funded?

Stays in the summer semester 2021:
Please note that the DAAD-PROMOS scholarships are suspended at ALU in the summer semester 2021 due to the corona pandemic for stays abroad. Online projects, which are conducted online from Germany, are exempt from this regulation and can be partially funded, as long as essential parts of the goal/purpose of the funding measure can be achieved. Please contact Ms. Obert and inform yourself about the possibilities of receiving funding for online stays, if this is an option for your project.

Stays in the winter semester 21/22:
Applications for stays abroad with a start date from 01.10.2021 (beginning of the WS) at the earliest, can be handed in. Please note for your planning, that stays can only be funded up to and including February of the following year, e.g. from 01.10.21 - 28.02.22. Whether funding will then be possible in fall depends not only on the quality of the application, but also on the corona situation.

In general, only projects in countries without any travel alerts can be funded. However, you can still apply for stays from October 2021 in the hope that there will no longer be a travel alert at the time of departure, in order to keep the option open. In addition, stays can also be partially funded in the winter semester under certain circumstances, if they take place online and/or start online and in case you thereby still achieve essential parts of the goal/purpose of the funding measure. Please contact Ms. Obert and find out about the possibilities of receiving funding for online stays, if this is an option for your project.

In 2021, the following program lines can be supported at the University of Freiburg. Please take into account the terms explained for each program line, by clicking on the respective link below:

  1. Semesters abroad (3 - 5 months)
  2. Theses abroad (1 - 6 months)
  3. Internships abroad (6 weeks - 6 months)

Please note, that not all scholarship lines described on the DAAD homepage are offered at the University of Freiburg in 2021. Excursions and group tours cannot be funded and language and specialized courses are no longer supported at the University of Freiburg, either.
If you are looking for financial support for lecture tours, congress participations or the like, please contact DAAD directly.

Amount of financial support

The type and amount of financial support depends on the length of the stay and the destination:

  • Up to 10 weeks (9 weeks and 6 days): travel-cost allowance
  • 10 weeks or longer: travel-cost allowance and monthly scholarship rate

The amounts for each country can be found in the DAAD-PROMOS list.

Please note, that you cannot apply for stays in all countries mentioned in this list. Please see the information in the individual program lines to find out which countries are available for application at the University of Freiburg. Moreover, please note that the University of Freiburg does not pay for tuition fees and that the 'Aufenthaltspauschale' does not apply for the program lines offered at the University of Freiburg.

Application regulations – How can I apply?

In accordance with the terms of the DAAD, the application regulations are determined by each university and may be different for other universities. Depending on the duration of stay and the program line, there are different modalities.
