Financial aid for international students


The International Office may grant financial aid to international students in the case of an unforeseen temporary emergency situation, provided that the student is not at fault for the situation.

There are three kinds of financial aid:

  • Students (who have completed at least three semesters of their studies) can apply for student financial aid
  • Students who have almost completed their degree can apply for financial aid for graduating students
  • Doctoral students who are almost finished with their degree can apply for financial aid for finishing doctoral candidates.


  • Before applying for aid, the applicant must come to the International Office for advising. Contact
  • Application with the following documents: application form, proof of registration, CV (in tabular form) featuring a description of your educational career (1-2 pages),motivation letter (min. 1 page) describing why you require/are applying for financial aid, proof of current financial distress and situation (e.g. bank statements (Kontoauszüge) covering the entire period of the last three months), transcript of all grades and exam results (all course documentation (Scheine) earned at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität), letter of recommendation (Gutachten) from a professor at the Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg including an evaluation of your potential to successfully complete your studies within the originally foreseen period
  • as well as from graduating or doctoral students: a letter from the Examination Board (Prüfungsamt) confirming that you are registered for your final examination (Abschlussprüfung) stating the anticipated date of completion of your studies,
  • The application must be submitted in person.

The application deadlines are 15 January, 15 March and 15 September.

For a financial aid in extraordinary emergencies, the submission is also possible outside of these dates.
