Please note: The deadlines mentioned here are cut-off periods. This means that the university, or hochschulstart.de respectively, must receive your application documents by the mentioned deadline.

Detailed application periods for summer semester 2025 for international applicants as well

German applicants, applicants from countries of the European Union (EU) and the European Economic Area (EEA) as well as to applicants with a German education and all other applicants with equal status to Germans according to § 1 section 2 of the Higher Education Admissions Regulation

* Please enquire about the respective application deadlines on the websites of the relevant departments.

** Achievements acquired during the current semester must be submitted electronically by 20 September 2025 at the latest. ONLY for applications for the 5th semester in human medicine, dentistry and pharmacy (= 1st clinical semester) the certificate of the first section of the medical or dental or pharmaceutical examination must be submitted electronically to the university by 30 September 2025 at the latest for consideration in the top-up procedure. This is also necessary if the examinations were taken at a foreign university and recognised by the responsible state examination office.

Subsequent submissions must be sent as one file stating the name, application number, degree programme and semester applied for as an email attachment in PDF or JPG format to the following email address

For some degree programmes you have to take an entrance examination or you can take a test before applying:

International applicants

Applicants from countries that do not belong to the European Union (EU) or the European Economic Area (EEA) and do not have a German university entrance qualification. Those who do not have the same status as German applicants are defined in Section 1 (2) of the Higher Education Admission Regulation (Hochschulzulassungsverordnung - HZVO).

Registration

Lottery procedure

If study spots are still free after the last replacement procedure, they will be granted in a lottery procedure. Please send a separate informal application (postcard) for each field of study you wish to receive a spot for to the Academic Affairs Office of the University of Freiburg: Studentensekretariat der Universität Freiburg, 79085 Freiburg. The application period for the winter semester is from 15 September to 15 October, and the application period for the summer semester is from 15 March to 15 April. Applications received outside of these periods will not be included. Applicants who are not EU citizens and do not have a German school leaving certificate may not participate in the lottery.
