A leave of absence means taking a hiatus from your course of study. During this time the student remains enrolled. The leave of absence is counted at the same time as registration. A semester in which the student takes a leave of absence is considered a university semester, but not a study program semester. The leave of absence is valid for the entire semester and should not go over more than two semesters. An application for a leave of absence can only be made based on the reasons listed on the application form. The appropriate verification for the reason for the leave of absence must be included with the application.

You can obtain the application form with the list of possible reasons for a leave of absence at our office or by viewing and printing it out here:Leave of absence application form

The leave of absence application is customarily due during the registration period. Under extenuating circumstances (such as illness, birth or death) the application can be submitted immediately after the reason fort he leave of absence arises, but at the very latest at the end of the lecture period. (§ 15 of the submission and matriculation policy (ZimmO) [de]).

The leave of absence application can be submitted at the registration office.

International students must submit their application at the International Admissions and Services (IAS) office.
