Changing Fields/Changing Courses of Study

When changing the field of study or the program of study (degree objective), a rewriting is necessary, which you do with a new application. A change of subject is, for example, a change of major or minor in the bachelor's degree program. A change of program is, for example, a change from a teacher training program to a Bachelor's program or a change from a Bachelor's program to a Master's program.

When changing to a subject with restricted admission and/or to a subject with special admission requirements, an application for the new subject must first be submitted in due time. The change of subject can then only be carried out if admission to the new subject has been granted. You can find out which subjects have an admission restriction or special admission requirements and how to apply for them via the list of study programs. In the case of a change of subject to a subject without special admission requirements (admission-free), an application is a prerequisite for external applicants and preferable for students of the University of Freiburg.

Procedure for changing subject/program

Change of subject/program to a program with admission restrictions:

External applicants and students of the University of Freiburg:

Change of subject/program to a program without admission restriction:

External applicants:

  • Application for the new degree program via the application portal by the deadline.
  • Implementation of the change of subject during the enrollment period (see admission notification).
  • Presentation of a placement certificate: Placement recommendation of the examination board or the student advisor. This document can be uploaded during the application, but must be presented at the latest during matriculation.

Students of the University of Freiburg:

  • Application for the new course of study via the application portal is desired; transfer is also possible with a form directly at the Student Registration Office.
  • Presentation of a placement certificate: Placement recommendation of the examination board or the student advisor. This document can be uploaded when applying via the application portal, but must in any case be submitted to the Registrar's Office no later than two weeks after the start of lectures.

In case of a change after the 3rd semester, you need a certificate of subject advising. You can ONLY get this certificate from the student advisor of the study program you want to change to.

Transferring to a different university/swapping places

Transferring to a different university

  • Outgoings: Please apply directly to your desired university. A person who transfers is defined as someone who remains in the same field, but changes to a different university.
  • Incomings: Please refer to the application page where you will find the appropriate modality for university transfers (also “advanced semesters), listed by degree program.

Exchange of university study places

Please note that each university sets its own framework for a study place exchange and checks the requirements independently of the decision of the other participating exchange university. There is no legal entitlement to a study place exchange.

At the University of Freiburg, a study place exchange is possible in accordance with §7 of the Admissions and Registration Regulations (Zulassungs- und Immatrikulationsordnung) under the following conditions:

  • An exchange of places for the 1st academic semester is not possible
  • In human medicine, a change of study place is possible for the 2nd-4th pre-clinical semester and for the 1st clinical semester and in higher clinical semesters.
  • Study place exchanges are only possible in the same degree programme. In the case of degree programmes with restricted admissions, the admissions restriction must exist at both universities.
  • Both exchange partners must have the same level of education and be enrolled in the same academic semester or the same clinical study section in medicine (same clinical semester). For subjects with restricted admission, please note that the same level of education is based on the replenishment criteria for higher semesters.
  • There must be no loss of entitlement to an examination or final failure to pass a course or examination in the case of both exchange partners in the relevant degree programme
  • The agreement of the university affected by the exchange must be available
  • Both exchange partners must be admitted and enrolled at the respective university
  • In the event of an exchange, the student will be exmatriculated at the University of Freiburg

For study place exchanges in medicine in the 2nd (clinical) stage of studies, you will find detailed information here.
