Special Requests for Improving Chances of Admission
Students with a disability/chronic illness may request to be considered as a “hardship case” when applying for admission to studies (application to be considered under the quota for cases of extreme hardship in the allocation of places for admission). The places for admission available under the hardship quota are granted in accordance with stringent criteria to applicants who would experience disadvantages extending far beyond those normally to be expected if their applications were to be rejected. Applicants must provide evidence of special social and familial circumstances that make it absolutely necessary that they be admitted to studies immediately in their first-choice field of study.
Special health-related reasons for immediate admission include the following:
- No possibility of meaningful occupation during the waiting period
Applicants for admission with a disability/chronic illness may be admitted immediately if immediate admission will ensure their occupational rehabilitation and if they either have no possibility of finding meaningful occupation during the waiting period or it would be unreasonably more difficult for them to do so than it would be for a healthy applicant. This may also be the case for applicants who cannot complete a degree program they have begun or who continue working in their previous profession for health reasons. - Illness shows a tendency of worsening
Applicants whose illness shows a tendency of worsening that is highly likely to lead to a situation in which they will no longer be in the condition to cope with the strain of completing the degree program if they have to wait to begin it may be admitted immediately. - Limited occupational field
Applicants who are limited to a narrow occupational field from the outset due to their disability or chronic illness may be admitted immediately. The degree program they wish to complete may be expected to lead to their rehabilitation.
In addition, it is possible to make requests for disadvantage compensation (shortened waiting period, grade improvement). In this case the applicant must provide evidence of having been prevented from achieving a shorter waiting period due to exceptional circumstances over which he or she had no control.

For most fields of study, the selection procedure takes place directly at the university.

Dialogue-Oriented Service Procedure (DoSV)
In the fields Law, Business Administration: Public and Non-Profit Management (B.Sc.), Biology (B.Sc.), Geography (B.Sc.), Pharmaceutical Sciences (B.Sc.), Psychology (B.Sc.), and Sports Science – Human Movement Science and Health (B.Sc.), the University of Freiburg participates in the dialogue-oriented service procedure in granting places for admission. Here, too, it is possible to make the special requests described above.

Applicants for admission to the fields Medicine, Dentistry, and Pharmacy may also submit special requests (see above) to improve their chances of being admitted. These include the following:
- request to be admitted at one’s first-choice institution
- request for immediate admission as a hardship case
- request for disadvantage compensation to receive an improved average grade/shorter waiting period
